Black Burned Blimp – Crash Overdrive (2019) Stoner Rock from: Holanda

SP. Brothers could you talk some words about your recent album from 2019 “crash overdrive” for people that don’t know your band and sound?

Black Burned Blimp: Hi! We are Eric and Jurjen from Black Burned Blimp.

Black Burned Blimp are a rock band from Arnhem, the Netherlands.

The band consists of Eric Broers (vocals and guitar), Arjan Broers (drums), Michaël van der Meer (guitar and keyboards) and Jurjen van Wingerden (bass).

We sound like a speedfreakin’ monster having a visit in disneyworld, we combine experimental rock (with a pinch of punk) with the heavy sound of stoner and top it of with some psychedelics here and there.

And that’s actually what we tried to do on Crash Overdrive, make stoner rock music without any boundaries! To have fun and being adventurous without limits!

SP. What is the story of Black Burned Blimp? could you share a story of the band with us? why the name black burned blimps? did you hae same lineup since started?

JURJEN: The idea of Black Burned Blimp started in Veenendaal, it’s a city near Arnhem where most of the bandmembers grew up before moving to Arnhem. Eric has a lot of musical creativity and he had the idea to play straight and simple rock music because he wanted to get back on a stage again and party.

Soon his brother Arjan joined as they shared a lot of bands together when they were still little punks. Before I knew I was asked to join as Eric remembered I still had a bass catching some dust. When we started to rehearse we found out the sound wasn’t fulfilled and that we needed another guitarist.

Our good ginger friend and motormouse Mike (Big Daddy’s Breakfast Voodoo) joined the line up to play with a bunch of kids (back then). After a period of time Mike left the band because he also played in a stoner blues band and couldn’t fit all the bands in his time schedule.

So for a small period of time we were back to 3 band members. At the time we were also thinking to add a new sound with keyboards. The chemistry of the band was on a good level so we started to think who we could add  and we came across Michael. We knew Michael from the Veenendaal black metal scene and also knew he could play the keyboard. We were too lazy to find two members who could fill in the positions we needed and Michael checked all the boxes we needed. So we were glad he wanted to join when we asked him!

ERIC: And the name of the band… I wanted a name with 3 words and 3 b’s (don’t know why) and Black Burned Blimp was the first thing that popped into my head. We eventually kept it, because it’s a great tongue twister and it reminds us of Led Zeppelin.

SP How was composing and recording for Crash Overdrive? There’s some really heavy riffage but I can listen a lot of melodic passages and some samplers on music, the sound is sooo new and freshing!

JURJEN: Eric is our main composer and creative brain in the band. It’s hard for him to sit still so before we knew we had an album ready.

After we recorded our demo we wanted to do more D.I.Y. Stuff and extend the sound of Black Burned Blimp. We were really satisfied with the demo and quality of it but we aren’t the richest people around  so we started to invest in some studio gear and decided to take the matter in our own hands. We recorded the guitars and bass at home but we still worked together with white noise studio and Freek Phillipi to record the drums and do the mix and master on the album!

ERIC: I love this way of recording! We’ll definitely use it in the future, because it gives you a lot more of time and experimental freedom.

SP There’s a conceptual connection between songs? Who designed the cover artwork?

JURJEN: Not necessarily, the songs are about daily life stuff but also things that pop up in the news. We did the artwork ourselves.

ERIC: Upcoming EP’s and albums will be very conceptual, so stay tuned!

SP What was the public reception for this work? Did you tour this album before covid shit? theres a physical release on CD or vinil that people could buy?

JURJEN: Overall we received a good reception of the album. As soon as we released the album different websites picked it up and had positive reviews written. Also it was nice to see the songs played on different channels and podcasts all over the world, Australia, Hungary, United States to name a few country’s. We haven’t had a real tour but we played as many gigs as possible before covid struck. Because of the shit virus we had some nice shows canceled otherwise we would have played with Greenlung and the vintage caravan.

ERIC: At the moment we don’t have physical release. We wanted to give the people something to listen to and therefor the album is a free gift! We do have t shirts and some small merch to sell if people want to support us! Also it is possible to make a donation on bandcamp.

SP What is the covid status on your country? There’s a date for concerts comeback? what are future post covid plans for Black Burned Blimp?

JURJEN: At the moment people are getting vaccinated so there is hope we can play for a crowd again in August! But we are bit weary of our prime minister as we already have had more and hard restrictions as soon as he said the situation was under control. Now we even have a curfew so even online streaming concerts are getting tough! At the moment we are mainly focused on writing new songs and we have tunes games and beers going on YouTube. So people can enjoy watching us getting slaughtered while playing games and listening to new (stoner) music!

SP. Talking about concerts, how is the stoner rock public scene on your country? Did you play with similar bands like yours? ¿Could you recommend us some stoner rock local bands from netherlands with us?

JURJEN: We have quite a big stoner rock scene going on in the Netherlands! The Netherlands are famous because of the festivals like Roadburn, stoned from the underground, Pinkpop, Dynamo open air and Lowlands. But also most international stoner bands like a visit to Amsterdam to Melkweg and the coffeeshops, haha.

ERIC: Also there are (and were) a lot of Dutch bands. The list is almost endless. Toner low, The Machine, Sungrazer and Stone in Egypt to name a few. But a few of the local bands from the scene and good friends are Thammuz, Lifelong, Fuzzboar and Barbason.

SP Could you share with us some of your musical influences to work the Black burned blimp sound?

JURJEN: What a difficult question, jajaja. When the band was formed we got a lot of inspiration from Qotsa, Kyuss, FU Manchu and Faith No More. But as time progresses we can add more bands to the list. As long as we are able to keep our own sound any other band can be an inspiration!

SP Could you list for us your top 12 tracks that influenced your sound on this album?

Millionaire – Champagne

Kyuss – Green Machine

Nirvana – Milk It

Queens of the stone age – Avon

SP would you like to come to mexico to play someday in future and share with us a cold beer and spicy food?

JURJEN: Mas temprano que tarde! That would be awesome! I can brush up my Spanish and I would rather have some Coronas in my stomach instead of in my lungs!

ERIC: Would love to rock on stage in Mexico!! And cold beer and spicy food with our Mexican brothers and sisters sounds like heaven!!
