Primitivos, por fin tenemos banda nueva para escribir algunas palabras al momento de su escucha, ellos son Weddings desde Austria que antes de la pandemia lanzaron su album Haunt! el cual contiene sonidos perfectamente trabajados para crear un ente de fusión stoner, grunge y lo mejor de todo voces duales al unisono con diferente tesitura!, la baterista Elena Rodriguez cantando a la par de Jay Brown con los riffs y cerrando el trio poderoso Phil a los bajeos!! Si a ustedes les gustan los sonidos del stoner nuevos esto es para ustedes, una interesante propuesta musical que luce prometedora, pasen a leer mis palabras sobre lo que pensé a primeras escuchas de Weddings, salud a todos ustedes hermanos y subid el volumen!. Weddings es una banda internacional que radica en Austria conformada por Jay Brown a la guitarra/voces, Elena Rodriguez a la batería y voces y Phil Nordling, y por que digo internacional? es debido a la nacionalidad Canadiense de Jay, española de Elena y Sueca de Phil… diablos!, la distancia jamás será un pretexto hermanos., ellos se juntaron para hacer música en Austria y.. si quieren saber más como se formó Weddings y un breve reltato de su historia os invito a leer la entrevista en donde Jay nos cuenta detalladamente como sucedió!.
La llegada de los 20’s fue inminente, pero no todas son malas noticias ni desgracias a como nos tienen acostumbrados los medios masivos, el mundo sigue girando hermanos estemos o no y los lanzamientos con que comenzó este 2020 fueron en verdad aplastantes entre ellos se encuentra este album llamado Haunt lanzado en febrero de 2020, antes del apocalipsis. El sonido de Weddings es deliciosamente degustable para los fanáticos más acérrimos de hueso colorado del stoner rock, pero aqui nos sugiere de la misma manera un sonido fresco, trabajado y elegante a comparación de las monstruosidades deformes con que les estamos acostumbrados a compartirles. Weddings es el sonido de una nueva generación en búsqueda de una identidad y sonido propio inspirados en los trabajos clásicos del stoner rock puro en bandas como Kyuss rallando al grunge y agregandole toda una gama armónica producto de las ifluencias de este trio poderoso!, pero antes quisiera hablar de una cosa muy importante:
WOMEN IN ROCK!
En verdad es un gusto enterarme cuando una chica es integrante de alguna banda de este tipo de calaña de música proveniente de un medio 100% underground y no degustable para los metaleros comunes y corrientes (y que bueno)!, la baterista Elena Rodríguez luce una tremenda habilidad al tocar la bataca y al mismo tiempo acompañar a las voces al unísono junto con nuestro compadre guitarrista/vocalista Jay Brown como el primer tema Pyramids en donde los rítmos frenéticos disparan una energía tremenda oculta dentro de Elena en donde yo puedo escuchar rítmos fusionados de diversos estilos musicales que hacen en conjunto de este trio poderoso el sonido Weddings.
De repente tuve un dejavu, me recuerda mucho la dualidad de las voces a esas grabaciones de los 70’s en donde todos o dos miembros dela banda cantaban en distintas tesituras vocales y cabe señalar que es de mi agrado el escuchar este tipo de variaciones sumado al feelin que nos transmite weddings, pero de eso hablaré en párrafos siguientes, en mi biblioteca musical no habia tenido el gusto de escuchar algo semejante contemporáneo en donde hubiese dos voces principales, weddings son los primeros!, en la entrevista nos mencionan algunas bandas que han tenido esta configuracion y que sin lugar a dudas fueron influencia fuerte en Haunt. Los unicos que conozco es esas armonizaciones por Layne y Jerry de Alice in chains, aaah que delicia de coros se aventaban creando un contrapunto grunge, por que ya no somos capaces algunos músicos de cantar y tener dos vocalistas principales? nos hemos olvidado de armonizar y entonar como es debido?, weddings es la excepción.
les aconsejo si es que se dedican a la música lo hagan ya, busquen a los músicos adecuados y rompan los etereotipos musicales, basta de 100 bandas de heavy metal que suenan todas igual o de las mil bandas de metal sinfónico!
Les decía que las mujeres tienen ese poder de hacer lo que ellas quieran solo es cosa de ordenarse en sus actividades, ellas son más directas que uno y no se andan con rodeos, para las lectoras que nos estan siguiendo esta es la tercera banda en donde una chica agrega ese poder en lo que hace, les aconsejo si es que se dedican a la música lo hagan ya, busquen a los músicos adecuados y rompan los etereotipos musicales, basta de 100 bandas de heavy metal que suenan todas igual o de las mil bandas de metal sinfónico!,.. basta de eso y demos la bienvenida a extrañas fusiones subterráneas como el exquisito sonido de Weddings, sonido oscuro, sensual, depresivo y hasta frio como las calles de piedra y concreto de Austria.
Bandas diferentes, sensaciones diferentes.
El sonido de weddings asi como en todas las bandas que hermos tenido fortuna de escuchar en sonidos primitivos son el resultado de lo que escuchan y viven, de sus experiencias pasadas con sus anteriores bandas, en su mayoría somos melómanos adictos a la música y en la búsqueda de músicos para hacer una banda nos hemos encontrado y hecho música nueva en base a una amalgama de todo lo que hemos escuchado desde nuestro nacimiento, asi funcionan las cosas. Para weddings así fue (tal y como nos lo narran en la entrevista que muy amabemente nos respondieron). En lo personal yo como melómano empedernido por parte de la batería escucho muchos ritmos e influencias como en Labrynth ese ritmo cortado característico del post punk, para despues fusionarse con una cosa que el mismisimo brant bjork nos dejó inmortalizado con kyuss, o como dice Jay, el sonido grunge noventero de Alice in Chains que todos amamos. Luego las guitarras melódicas a mitad de tema – verso que me recuerdan al rock industrial tocado en los 90’s!, muchas cosas que fusionar hermanos!., yo en lo personal igual uso muchas disonancias que me encuentro en discos de post punk y en trabajos clásicos de black metal, las incorporo al riff y es música nueva! En general la mayoria de sonidos nuevos salen de las etiquetas que aqui usamos y no podemos hacer otra cosa que usar la palabra rock, o rock lodoso,
También nos cuentan la etapa oscura por la que pasaron al grabar este disco, y vaya que si, quedó inmortalizada esa oscuridad para siempre en estos 8 temas que suenan frios, viscerales y solitarios. Broken Bones es un tema hermoso, iniciando con las guitarras con mucho reverb y la dinámica con que inicia de repente baja para darle paso a la dulce voz de Elena y Jay junto con el soporte armónico vocal de Phil a una octava arriba. La guitarra de Jay quiere bluesear, hermanos no saben lo que se siente crear tus propias musicas y en algun pasaje musical pensar,… joder esto lo hubiese hecho Jimi Hendrix!., me refiero a esos momentos de inspiración al momento de estar tocando, 100% intuitivos y despues pulidos para formar un tema, en ese descanso la guitarra de Jay quiere bluesear. Broken bones tiene un aire épico hermanos que me encanta.
Los antecedentes de weddings son bastante peculiares, me sorprendió cuando supe que tocaban covers en eventos, en especial en bodas!, esto explica el por que su sonido es exacto y no por eso digo que es malo si no es como una especie diferente, un lenguaje diferente al entorno donde yo provengo, weddings viene de tocar todo al traste osea con tempos perfectos y ritmos bien definidos, yo del barrio que provengo todo es tocado sin metrónomo y tocamos intuitivamente bocetando vagamente la estructura, y ambos estilos me gustan, como esa power ballad en I Cant Say No To You Anyway bastante oscura pero con sus tempos marcados perfectamente. El riff entre cada verso me recuerda mucho a Garbage hermanos, soy fanático de esa música noventera,.., garbage raya en lo grunge, alternativo pero a su modo muy oscuro y sarcástico de ver las cosas!
además el plus que hace único este proyecto, la fuerte voluntad de Elena de ser baterísta y vocalista junto con Jay!, ustedes pueden explotar esa cualidad única!.
Mi tema favorito fue dificil de elegir sin embargo Hidden Message contiene un riff excepcional en conjunto con las voces duales etereas de Elena-Jay que me hacen sentir algo que todo mundo ha olvidado pero que aun tiene algo que decir para aquellos que tienen la paciencia de extraer la esencia de cada cosa y es justo lo que estoy haciendo hermanos,. mi ingles realmente apesta pero puedo enfocarme en las armonías dibujadas en el tiempo. Weddings en verdad es un proyecto prometedor el cual en mi más humilde opinión tienen para explotar sus lados más salvajes e intuitivos musicales, la base rítmica de Elena y Phill tienen tanto que ser explotadas para que nuestro camarada Jay se desviva en emotivos solos de guitarra con wah wah y riffs aplastantes, además el plus que hace único este proyecto, la fuerte voluntad de Elena de ser baterísta y vocalista junto con Jay!, ustedes pueden explotar esa cualidad única!.

SP. ¿could you tell us a short story from the band Weddings? how do you get together to form Weddings? Why the band name? is about the ceremony of get married?
We all met in Salzburg, Austria. We all moved there from different corners of the world five years ago or so. I’m Canadian, Elena is Spanish, Phil is from Sweden. As musicians and music lovers it seems you gravitate towards other like-minded people and we found each other. I started writing some demos and we realized pretty quickly that we wanted to make the project a full-time thing. We had a cover band at the time and had a group chat about places we thought that band could play. Someone jokingly said we could play weddings and we decided that the word “Weddings” looked cool and would be a great band name. There’s something delicate and elegant about the word. Playing heavy rock music with a name like Weddings creates this interesting contrast. Now we’re Weddings. We’re married to the fucking music! – Jay
SP – Could you describe in words what new listeners will discover on your full length album?
I think there’s a lot of variety on our debut album. It’s only eight songs but in those eight songs you go on a pretty cool journey. No two songs are alike and there’s a lot happening lyrically. It’s dark. it was a dark time when we were writing the record but I hope it also offers a sense of hope. Like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. My favourite bands are all very filmic and a bit theatrical when it comes to the stories being told. Hopefully you get a bit of that from our record as well. – Jay
SP – There’s a modern sounding on the whole album mixed witht he blast riffage from stoner rock sound!, is the result of your influences? or is the natural sound that you get when jamming for first time?… and the dual vocals!! ¡how this idea was born from having double vocals?
Each of us comes from very different musical backgrounds; certainly stoner rock is a big cornerstone for Jay and I as well as 90´s grunge, but each member contributes their own musical influences and background to the final mix: Jay´s background includes industrial rock and post punk, I came from psychedelic rock and heavier genres such as doom or sludge, and Phil is heavily into punk rock. So what you hear on the album is a mix of all those influences coming together and merging themselves with stoner rock. The double vocals has always been a main factor in our band. Before Weddings, the three of us played in a cover band with other friends, and it was back that Jay and I discovered how well our voices matched. So by the time Weddings was born, it was 100% clear that double vocals was going to be one of our strongest assets. – Elena
SP – Could you tell us what musicians or bands are the inspiration when composing the sound of this weddings Haunt album?
We were highly inspired by the vocal harmonies of Alice in Chains as well as their music of course, which Jay and I are great fans of. Other bands that inspired us were Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Mountain, Sleepy Sun or True Widow. Most of them heavy sounding bands with beautiful, male/female vocal arrangements. – Elena
SP – Now I know why you could answer this in spanish! this is a questions for Elena Rodriguez, ¿que tan dificil es el llevar las voces a la par de Jay y tocar con esa brutalidad la batería? Me recuerda al trabajo arduo que tuvo el baterista de Sir Lord Baltimore John Garner, lo conoces?
A singing drummer is definitely a rare thing to find! But for some reason it comes naturally to me; I´ve been doing it in all my other bands since my early 20s and I have found out that drumming actually helps my singing, so both things have become kind of inseparable. The strength I need to use to pound the drums helps me project my voice as well, so I think I actually sing better when I´m drumming at the same time! And thanks for the John Garner analogy ?- Elena
SP – How was composing songs for Haunt? and how was the recording experience for HAUNT?
We had a blast making this record. I wrote a bunch of demos during a pretty dark period in my life. They resonated with Elena and Phil enough for us all to decide to start taking the project more seriously. Phil knows a producer named Alessandro Gavazzi who has this great studio in Rome called Hell Smell. We flew there from Austria and Elena banged out like four or five songs on drums in half a day! She was a machine! We recorded all the drums and vocals in couple of days, ate pizza, drank delicious wine and got inspired by the ancient architecture. It was a really cool but intense experience.
Then we came back and Phil and I recorded bass and guitars with a super talented musicians and producer Emanuel Krimplstaetter in Graz, Austria. He mixed the record and we sent it of to Sweden for mastering. So the whole thing, the band, how and where we recorded; it’s all a very international experience. – Jay
SP – Practically you were releasing Haunt when pandemic shit comes!, how was the impact for weddings? and how are things now on your country, you are back on stage by this months? what are the future plans for Weddings in a post-covid era?
We were lucky to release the album and do a short release tour before everything shut down in Europe. We did have to cancel a couple of shows this summer, but luckily we didn’t have any longer tours already booked. The virus numbers are going up slightly again now in Austria, but we have our first post-covid show in Salzburg on September 19th.
We’re also playing the Dome of Rock festival in Salzburg in November, and after that we hope the virus has died down further so we can do more shows going into 2021. – Phil
SP – What tips did you tell to new musicians trying to do their stuff (stoner rock musicians)?
We’re still pretty new so I don’t think we’re in much of a position to offer too much advice. All I can say is if you want something bad enough, you make it happen. We wanted create this band and we work hard to keep our relationships healthy so that it can keep moving forward. We are super excited about the new material we are working on and we can’t wait to record the next record. – Jay

SP – What musical backgrounds this power trio comes from?, do you listen all kinds of music or only focus your blasting energy on stoner and heavy music?
I think everything you hear somehow informs you creatively. While we’re very much fans of bands in the stoner rock genre, we’re also influenced by a lot of other styles of music. I’m a huge R.E.M. fan
and I always appreciated that they never created two albums that sounded the same. Constantly moving forward and being free to create without having to box yourself into a particular preconceived idea about what a band in any genre of music should sound like is the goal in my mind. – Jay

Austria is full of amazing musicians. There are a lot of kick ass bands from Austria on our label StoneFree Records! Savanah, Great Rift, The Vampyres, Intra and this new signing Johnny & The Rotten just to name a few. I really dig Black Palms Orchestra as well. We’ve played with a lot of great acts over the past couple years. Sleeping Child from Hamburg, Germany are very cool and this band Kyning from Leipzig are the fucking future of metal! – Jay
SP – if someday we goes to europe, could we have a jam with beer and barbecue?
